Did you hear the news? NicoNewMedia.com recently made the switch from a free IM Creator website to an $88/year Squarespace website ( I had a coupon code.) Not only are the layout options more aesthetically pleasing than IM Creator but Squarespace was kind enough to transfer my former Wordpress blog to my new Squarespace site automatically! There are a few glitches that I have come across, minor things really, but overall I am digging the change! They offer layouts for a variety of industries and even integrate shopping cart technology if you are looking to sell stuff. Sweet! Shout me if you want to hear me ramble about why you should make the switch yourself.
Before, when my website was free and cheesy, freezy if you will, I found it far less embarrassing to hide behind my brand and remain a faceless entity. Now that I am proud of how the site looks I am going to take a moment to introduce myself. Nico New Media is Nicole Paulus. Nicole Paulus is Nico New Media. How did I get here, you ask?
Nicole Paulus is Nico New Media
Nicole Paulus has always been a hepcat in the making (except for those dreadful middle school years where her hair resembled a mushroom from Mario and she drowned her sorrows with Oatmeal Cream Pies every day after school.)
She eventually graduated from the University of Arizona (BEAR DOWN) albeit at a very inopportune time, *just* as the economy was tanking. She bartended and cocktailed a few years, trying to distract herself from the fact that student loans were piling in and she had zero job prospects. After all, she was a Comm major, not an engineer or anything. Then one day she got the harebrained idea to move to Los Angeles and try her luck there. Before she left Tucson her grandpa warned her "Why would you want to go to LA? There are no jobs in LA." Grandpa couldn't have been more right., kind of.
After a few panic attacks later and a thousand cover letters slightly tweaked and submitted, she got a call back from a Craigslist ad looking for a copywriter. Long story short, she got the gig and started getting referral after referral. Eventually, she stopped applying to jobs altogether and focused on expanding her skill set and growing her business.
She currently spends her free time lurking the interweb, spooning her sweet pup, sipping hoppy IPAs, hoarding coupons, and dancing shamelessly while comparing organic carrot prices to non organic carrot prices at Sprouts.
The (Wo)man Behind the Curtain
Hiding behind your brand is easy (especially if you are have introverted tendencies) but it won't get you noticed! Now more than ever, you should be trying to connect with your audience on a personal level. Gone are the days that online anonymity is acceptable. Instead, people want to see your face, they want to know your dog's name, they want to know you are a real person. It's time to let the world know who that wizardly (wo)man is behind that curtain. Contact me if you need more words of encouragement. You deserve to be noticed, you really do!
