I made a big mistake this past week. I failed to blog about a trending topic before the media got ahold of it. SMH.
A few days ago, I was browsing through my Facebook feed for catchy headlines. The one worthy of my click happened to be an article about a "Dumb Starbucks" that recently opened up near my old neighborhood in Los Feliz, California.
The article speculated that it was an art installation and I thought nothing of it. BIG mistake! The next day, "Dumb Starbucks" made an appearance on websites like Forbes, Refinery 29, Gawker, Mashable and more. If I had reported on this phenomena a day before it broke major news, my blog would have gotten hit with a TON of traffic when people Googled "Dumb Starbucks." Who is the dumb one now?
Want to be a trendsetter? Don't make BIG mistakes like me! You may not strike gold every time, but then again, no trendsetter started out with pockets full of gilded nuggets. You'll have to report on news big and small to avoid passing up trends. Eventually, you'll start to pick up what your audience likes and curating content will be like taking candy from a baby.
Here is what you should do if you want to be a trendsetter:
1. Decide what industry you'd like to be a trendsetter for--the more specific the better (ex. instead of Fashion, you'd pick Brooklyn Fashion, instead of Marketing, you'd pick Content Marketing for Blogs, etc.)
2. Pick your favorite (most used) social media network and "LIKE" or "FOLLOW" current trendsetters in your chosen industry. Feel free to follow the personal accounts of writers or employees of a particular brand as well since they are likely the ones that are curating the trendsetting content. You should also make sure you pay attention to the accounts of local news in major cities like New York, Los Angeles, Seattle, Miami, Atlanta, etc.
3. Pay attention. Check your feed multiple times daily (which you probably already do anyways) and make note of content that is interesting, off the wall, crazy, funny, eye catching.
4. Blog (or Tweet or send out a Telegram or release a carrier pigeon or update your Facebook status)-however you want to convey your message, now is the time to do it. Don't hesitate. Trendsetters are plugged in ALL the time and are prepared to report whether they are at the bar, at church, or at bar church. Go Get 'Em.
